UW Tacoma students have until Nov. 6 to submit work to the first-ever Autumn Zine from Tahoma West, the campus arts and literary journal.
The zine marks a new direction for the publication, which has historically released one large annual issue each school year. Tahoma West plans to add quarterly zines alongside its flagship edition, as we reported Oct. 23. The goal is to get more student work in front of readers throughout the year.
Each zine will feature 10 to 15 submissions, compared with the 20 to 40 pieces in the annual issue. Three quarterly zines are planned in addition to the yearly edition.
The change is significant. The annual edition of Tahoma West, which is open to students, staff, faculty and alumni, received about 250 submissions for its 30th edition, according to the UW Tacoma submission guidelines page.
Every submission goes through a blind review process in which names are stripped before editors read the work.
In coverage published Oct. 23, Co-Editor-in-Chief Jaelyn Severino compared the annual issue to a full-sized candy bar and the zine to a fun-sized version.
Co-Editor-in-Chief Madison Gosselin called the Autumn Zine a "test-run," saying the editors want to keep the first issue light-hearted and simple with no set theme.
Longer pieces, the editors said, should go to the regular annual submission process.
Tahoma West accepts visual art, poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and multimedia work. Gosselin said the journal has even received video game submissions. Both editors stressed that students in every major are welcome.
Gosselin said the editorial team reviewed every submission for the 30th edition. "We went through every single one," she said in the October coverage. Selected contributors are contacted only after the blind review is complete.
The Nov. 6 deadline was extended from an earlier date, according to a Tahoma West Instagram post. The original deadline was not specified.
Students can submit through Dubnet or by emailing [email protected]. Publication is set for Nov. 13.
