Sound Transit is launching a pilot program that will let dogs ride on short leashes aboard Link light rail, Sounder trains and ST Express buses.
The regional transit agency announced the pilot in a news release, as KING 5 reported. Previously, pets had to be carried in small containers. Under the new guidelines, dogs may also travel on a short leash. The pilot runs through spring 2027.
For Tacoma commuters who ride Sounder or catch ST Express, the change means a dog can come along without needing a carrier. Cats and other small pets still must stay in secure carriers, according to KOMO News.
Rules for riders
Riders must keep pets under control, clean up after them and keep them off seats. Pets cannot block aisles or doors. Aggressive animals are prohibited.
Pet travel is not guaranteed. Sound Transit's website states that staff may restrict pet travel when safety, sanitation or overcrowding concerns exist.
Violating the policy may result in a code of conduct violation or a response from Sound Transit Police.
Rules for service animals remain unchanged under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
What happens next
Sound Transit said it will use the pilot to collect safety, accessibility and operational data, plus employee feedback, to shape a permanent pet policy.
The agency plans to monitor facilities, maintenance data and security reports to measure whether the program succeeds.
Signs explaining the guidelines will go up at Sound Transit facilities in the coming weeks.
Riders who need to report an aggressive animal or other onboard problem can call or text Sound Transit Security at 206-398-5268.
