More Tacoma teens than ever turned out for Summer Late Nights, the free weeknight drop-in program that ran at 10 city sites through Aug. 28.
Tacoma Public Schools' Summer Late Nights wrapped its fourth season after serving what the district called a record number of teens across 10 supervised locations. The district published the season recap on Sept. 11. The program operated Monday through Friday, 5–10 p.m., from June 22 through Aug. 28.
The free program is open to all Tacoma Public Schools middle and high school students on a drop-in basis.
No appointment is required. Students could eat a free dinner every night, play open gym, join art and music activities and hang out with friends at staffed neighborhood sites.
Launched in June 2023, Summer Late Nights gives students five hours each weeknight at supervised locations run by the district and two partners: Parks Tacoma and the Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound. The district did not release a specific attendance figure for the 2026 season.
$300,000 in county funding
Pierce County backed the program with a $300,000 grant from the Puget Sound Taxpayer Accountability Account (PSTAA). The county announced the grant as part of $2.6 million in PSTAA youth-program investments in July, describing Summer Late Nights as a drop-in program providing safe opportunities for peer interaction and connection with positive adult mentors.
Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello framed the investment as a violence-prevention strategy on July 15, when the grants were announced. "Helping youth to thrive is one of the top areas we're devoting our attention and resources," Mello said at the time. He added that the funds support programs proven to keep youth safe, foster academic success and develop social-emotional skills.
The county's announcement also noted that youth late-night programs offer constructive alternatives to unstructured time and serve as a strategy for reducing youth violence.
School year underway
The summer season ended two weeks before Tacoma students returned to classrooms for the 2026–27 school year. The district has not announced dates for a 2027 Summer Late Nights season.
