The castle-like high school on the bluff above Commencement Bay is headed for the Broadway stage.
A musical adaptation of "10 Things I Hate About You," the 1999 teen rom-com filmed largely at Stadium High School, will begin preview performances on Aug. 17, 2027, producers confirmed Sunday. The announcement gives Tacoma's Stadium District a fresh connection to one of the decade's most recognizable teen films.
Pop star Carly Rae Jepsen and Grammy-winning producer Ethan Gruska are writing the music and lyrics. Lena Dunham, creator of HBO's "Girls," and playwright Jessica Huang wrote the book. Two-time Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon ("An American in Paris," "MJ the Musical") will direct and choreograph, with Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal") handling music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations, according to Deadline.
The musical marks Jepsen's first project as a Broadway songwriter. She previously starred in the 2014 production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella." Gruska won his Grammy for work on boygenius' "The Record," named Best Alternative Music Album in 2024.
For Tacoma residents, the film's connection to the city runs deep. Stadium High School, at 111 North E St., doubled as the fictional Padua High. Heath Ledger serenaded Julia Stiles from the school's bleachers. Stiles read her character's poem in a Stadium classroom. The Stratford family home was filmed at 2715 North Junett St. in the North End, and a downtown music store scene used a location at 1117 Broadway.
The school itself has a story fit for a stage production. Originally designed in 1891 as a luxury hotel for the Northern Pacific Railroad, the building never opened for guests. The Tacoma School District converted it into a school, which opened in 1906. Known locally as the Brown Castle, it's a registered historical landmark.
Fans who want to revisit the filming locations don't have to wait for Broadway. Tacoma-based Pretty Gritty Tours lists a one-hour "10 Things I Hate About You" set tour starting at Stadium High School for $35.
