Manic Mermaid, the crystal and rock shop that started in Tacoma's Lincoln District about a decade ago, reopened Aug. 1 at 5436 S. Tacoma Way, Suite A, after closing its Point Ruston storefront in June.

Owners Janelle Elms and Charles Cox chose the South Tacoma Way corridor for their shop, which sells rocks and crystals sourced from around the world, along with fossils, jewelry, locally made chocolates and other gifts. Its former Point Ruston listing described inventory including amethyst, fluorite, malachite, dinosaur bones, meteorites and handmade truffles. The shop bills itself as kid-friendly, with museum-quality pieces children can touch and hold.

The move

Manic Mermaid closed its Point Ruston location at 5020 Main St., Suite M, on Sunday, June 14 after a 25% off moving sale. The shop posted a video on Facebook showing its new sign above the South Tacoma Way windows, which drew 6,900 views and 163 reactions.

The grand reopening was Saturday, Aug. 1. By Wednesday, Aug. 12, the shop posted an Instagram video titled "First Week Being Open On South Tacoma Way."

The shop is open now.

Why South Tacoma Way

The stretch of South Tacoma Way between South 47th and South 57th streets is one of Tacoma's 15 recognized Neighborhood Business Districts, according to the city's community development page. The corridor is known for independent shops, auto row and community events like the annual South Tacoma Classic Car Show.

The South Tacoma Neighborhood Plan, adopted in June 2025, marked a milestone in community-driven planning for the area.
