The LA Fitness at 5915 6th Ave. in Tacoma's Sixth Avenue corridor will permanently close at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 20.

Fitness International LLC, the California-based parent company, confirmed the closure. Front desk representative Luis Guzman said the corporate office notified staff the week of June 23 and offered no explanation for the decision. Signs went up on the gym's front doors that same day.

"Everybody is frustrated," member Kazuko Wohlers told The News Tribune.

Members can transfer to two remaining Tacoma locations — 1905B S. 72nd St. or 15707 Pacific Ave. S. — or to LA Fitness gyms in Federal Way and Puyallup at no extra charge. Those who prefer to cancel will not face additional fees, Guzman said. The Sixth Avenue location can be reached at (253) 590-4118 before July 20.

The company has not disclosed how many employees work at the Sixth Avenue location or what will happen to the space in the Highland Hill Shopping Center.

Fitness International operates more than 600 gyms nationwide under the LA Fitness, Esporta Fitness, City Sports Club, and Club Studio brands, serving over 3.7 million members.

The company has been fighting a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit filed in August 2025 that accuses it of making cancellations "exceedingly difficult" and charging consumers hundreds of millions of dollars in unwanted recurring fees. LA Fitness moved to dismiss the case in December 2025, calling the allegations "without merit."

No ruling had been issued as of late June 2026.
