Downtown Tacoma gets a café that stays open for late-night cocktails, and Ruston's waterfront picks up a romance bookstore in September.

Tropical Sip Café plans to open Friday, Sept. 4, at 901 Pacific Ave., Suite B, in downtown Tacoma.

The café will serve breakfast, sandwiches, salads, acai bowls and crepes, but its main draw is drinks: smoothies, daiquiris to-go, and dine-in mixed drinks and beer, The News Tribune reported.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the café will stay open until 11:30 p.m. That makes it one of the few spots on Pacific Avenue offering food and drinks into the late evening.

The News Tribune described the concept as an "all-day cafe with smoothies, daiquiris to-go" in a separate preview published Aug. 23.

Charles Askew, a Tacoma resident, is a co-owner. At least one additional owner is involved, though the other co-owners have not been publicly identified.

Three weeks later, Bewitched Romance will open its first permanent storefront at the Waterfront Market at Ruston on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The shop sells romance books, book accessories, clothing and gifts. It started online. The business has run pop-ups at local markets before landing a brick-and-mortar space.

The grand opening runs Saturday, Sept. 26, and Sunday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The business said the weekend will feature author signings, raffles, giveaways and goodie bags for the first 50 people in line each day.

Bewitched Romance also offers a service called Blind Dates with a Book.

Customers describe their preferred genre and themes, and the shop sends a handpicked mystery title along with book-themed gifts.

The bookstore announced the permanent location in an Aug. 21 Instagram post, acknowledging the space is small but saying it would have plenty of character. The post drew more than 600 likes and 36 comments.
