Tacoma families can pick up free backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and even dental cleanings at three community events this month, all before the school year starts.

Tacoma Public Schools posted the roundup on Wednesday, Aug. 5, noting it will add more events as details come in. None of the three require registration or tickets.

Here's what's on the calendar:

Back to School Bash — Saturday, Aug. 15

Life Center church hosts its bash at the Central Campus, 1717 South Union Ave., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can expect free backpacks, free haircuts, carnival games and food.

Stuff the Bus Block Party — Tuesday, Aug. 25

Communities in Schools of Tacoma holds its free school supply giveaway at Blix Elementary School, 1302 E. 38th St., from 2:30 to 5 p.m. The event is open to all Pierce County students.

Kids Health & Safety Fair — Saturday, Aug. 29

The Tacoma Police Department's annual fair moves to the Tacoma Dome, 2727 E. D St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free offerings include dental cleanings, vision and hearing screenings, and backpacks stuffed with school supplies. Backpacks are available while supplies last.

New this year: interactive STEM stations where kids can explore how science, technology, engineering and math connect to careers in fast-growing fields, according to the city's event listing.

The fair launched in 2023 at People's Community Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The move to the Tacoma Dome signals a bigger footprint for what is now at least the event's fourth year. Bervin Smith, the department's community engagement senior manager, is the contact for the fair.

All three events fall in the two weeks before classes resume, giving families multiple shots at free gear. The district's newsroom listing will be updated as more giveaways are confirmed.
