Tacoma residents can learn CPR for free at two locations Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, as part of the Tacoma Fire Department's annual CPR Weekend.

More than 15,000 people have taken the class over the years, according to the department's event website. Registration is open at CPRsunday.net.

The Eastside Community Center, at 1721 East 56th St., offers two sessions on Saturday: 10 a.m. and noon. Henry Foss High School, at 2112 South Tyler St., offers four on Sunday: 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.

Each class runs about two and a half hours. The department recommends arriving 10 to 20 minutes early to sign in and find a seat.

More than 50 certified Basic Life Support instructors staff the event, Tacoma Fire said on X. Lt. Jared Montgomery, a department instructor, is among them.

The curriculum covers adult, child and infant CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and how to recognize opioid overdose symptoms and administer Narcan. Students also learn foreign body airway obstruction management and home first aid kit essentials.

The course follows the C-A-B-D guidelines: compressions, airway, breathing and defibrillation. It includes 1.5 hours of classroom lecture and one hour of hands-on practice with CPR mannequins and AEDs.

Students who complete the course receive a Tacoma Fire Department CPR certification card, valid for two years. The certification is not an American Heart Association or Red Cross card, but all instructors hold AHA certification. According to the event's FAQ page, most non-healthcare employers accept it. The course does not meet Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers requirements.

There is no age requirement.

The only requirement for a certification card is attending the lecture and performing two full minutes of CPR. Sign up at CPRsunday.net.
