A 120-foot Coast Salish mural on the Tacoma Dome's south Exhibition Hall wall will receive a formal tribal blessing and ribbon-cutting Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m.

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians is hosting the public ceremony on the Dome's Northwest Plaza to celebrate the completion of "x̌əčulb," pronounced hutch-ulb. The word means "to tell the story of one's lineage" in Lushootseed.

The mural is the work of Anthony Duenas, a 43-year-old Puyallup Tribe member who grew up in Eastside Tacoma. Duenas spent seven days spray-painting the piece atop a lift, finishing Aug. 18, The News Tribune reported.

Standing more than 15 feet tall, the mural depicts a young person seeing their lineage ahead and an elder looking toward the mountain and the youth. In the center, a thunderbird takes flight over two people canoeing toward the observer, according to Tacoma Venues & Events.

"You write your name here on the curb, and it stays there for 100 years," Duenas told The News Tribune on Sept. 10. "I'm trying to leave my mark on the city, and this is forever permanent."

The Puyallup Tribe's Heritage Division selected Duenas through a competitive process that began in June 2025, according to TVE.

The agency funded the $75,000 project, which included design and fabrication, TVE Marketing Director Hillary Chynoweth said.

The project was developed in partnership with the Puyallup Tribe and in consultation with the city's Office of Arts & Cultural Vitality.

Puyallup ancestral villages once stood in the center of the Dome District at the mouth of the Puyallup River, according to The News Tribune. The Puyallup Tribe is a sovereign nation of more than 6,000 members and one of the largest employers in Pierce County.

Adam Cook, TVE director, said in a statement that the Dome "has always been where people come together."

He called the mural "one step toward recognizing the powerful connection between the Puyallup People, the Tacoma Dome, the land, and the community we serve."

Wednesday's ceremony is free and open to the public.
