Tacoma's Jhonathan Díaz escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth inning by striking out two batters and inducing a flyout.
Díaz set the tone for a 7-1 Rainiers victory over the Salt Lake Bees on Sunday, June 21, at The Ballpark at America First Square in South Jordan, Utah.
The win closed the first half of the Triple-A season and secured a series split for Tacoma (33-42) against Salt Lake (39-35).
Díaz pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out seven to earn his fifth win of the season. His outing gave Tacoma its 23rd quality start of the first half, the most in all of minor league baseball and the most by Rainiers starters through a first half since the 2018 staff posted 25, according to the team's postgame notes.
Patrick Wisdom went 2-for-4 with a solo RBI single in the first inning and a two-run homer into the left field seats in the ninth, his 14th of the season. Wisdom has hit for extra bases in six consecutive games, the fifth-longest such streak in the Pacific Coast League this season and the longest active streak in the league.
Jhonny Pereda broke the game open with a two-run double into the right field corner in the seventh, part of a four-run frame that turned a 1-0 lead into a 5-1 cushion. Wisdom and Pereda combined to go 3-for-9 with five RBI.
Ryan Bliss extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Over that stretch, Bliss is hitting .429 with four doubles, a triple, a homer, and six RBI.
Reliever Domingo González spun two scoreless innings to extend his streak to six consecutive scoreless outings. His 1.46 ERA across 22.2 innings is the lowest among PCL pitchers with at least 20 appearances. Cole Wilcox retired Salt Lake in order in the ninth.
Salt Lake's lone run came on a Josh Lowe leadoff homer in the fourth.
The 33-42 finish represents a turnaround from a 10-game losing streak that dropped Tacoma to 23-34 on May 31. The Rainiers went 10-8 over their final 18 games of the half.
The second-half schedule is already underway at Cheney Stadium, where Tacoma is hosting the Round Rock Express through Sunday, June 28. Remaining home games run Wednesday, June 25, through Sunday, June 28, with first pitches at 7:05 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 6:05 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday. The Sunday finale starts at 1:35 p.m.
