A man was shot and killed on the 1000 block of South Tacoma Way early July 6, and Tacoma police say no suspects are in custody.

Officers responded about 12:36 a.m. after reports of gunfire, according to a city press release published Monday by spokesperson Dee Paul.

When they arrived, they found a man with gunshot wounds and began life-saving efforts until Tacoma Fire Department crews reached the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

The Tacoma Police Department is investigating the case as a homicide. Detectives and crime scene technicians are working the case, the department said.

Investigators have not released information about what may have led to the shooting, KING5 reported. The victim's name has not been made public. Police have not said whether they are looking for specific witnesses or vehicles.

The facts released so far are limited. The city's press release confirmed the time, location, and that the victim was an adult male who died at the hospital. It did not describe a suspect, a motive, or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The 1000 block of South Tacoma Way sits in a commercial stretch south of downtown. The corridor has drawn city attention for traffic safety concerns.

The Tacoma City Council's Vision Zero Action Plan, approved in 2022 and updated in 2025, identifies South Tacoma Way as a high-risk corridor due to a history of serious crashes and speeding.

A separate planning study for the corridor was on the council's agenda at its June 23 meeting. That program addresses traffic-related deaths and injuries, not violent crime.

Anyone with information about the July 6 shooting is asked to call 911.

The investigation remains active. The Tacoma Police Department has not announced a next briefing or press conference on the case.
