A black storefront with gold lettering spelling "Houndstooth" now marks 2701 N. 21st St. in North Tacoma.

Peter Westphaelen and Ryan Love, the couple behind the new shop, are turning what has been Love's private art studio into a public gallery and retail space. The pair has leased the space for about two years. Before that, it housed Evolve Home + Apparel.

The owners are targeting a mid-July soft opening.

The shop splits in two: one side will display and sell Love's original artwork, while the other carries prints, candles, glassware, puzzles, and other handmade goods. The name comes from the couple's pet greyhounds.

"Art is for everyone," Westphaelen told the Tacoma News Tribune. He said Love's focus is on in-person connection, which is why Houndstooth intentionally has no website or social media presence.

Window displays will be built from recycled materials, including the cardboard boxes merchandise ships in. The owners also plan to eventually host live music by local musicians.

Westphaelen said the shop will likely be open Wednesday through Sunday, with hours still being finalized. Love plans to continue using the space as a working studio on off days.

Because Houndstooth has no online presence, North End residents will need to watch for signage or walk by the storefront on North 21st to catch the exact opening date.
