Three ticketed events are coming to Fort Nisqually Living History Museum inside Point Defiance Park this summer, including a new adults-only music night and the return of the annual Brigade Encampment.
Parks Tacoma announced the lineup in a June 22 press release. Here's what's on the calendar:
Brigade Encampment — Saturday and Sunday, July 18–19, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The annual celebration of the fur brigade's arrival recreates the scene when a year's worth of furs rolled through the Hudson's Bay Company trading post in 1855. Visitors can meet living historians, try period skills, and watch Punch and Judy puppet shows performed by Professor Petticoat. On Sunday, July 19, the Pacific Ohana Foundation performs in honor of the Hawaiian laborers who worked across the Puget Sound region for the Hudson's Bay Company. Food comes from Boss Mamas' Kitchen and Mauka Hawaiian Shave Ice.
Nisqually Live — Friday, August 7, 6–9 p.m. | $30 | 21+
This is the museum's first after-hours music event. The Oly Mountain Boys, a South Puget Sound bluegrass group picking since 2008 out of Olympia, headline. Pass the Lady Back opens. Attendees can try paper marbling and lavender sachet making, grab food from Buddy's Chicken & Waffles, and buy beer and wine through the Fort Nisqually Foundation, which says proceeds from drink sales support building restoration at the museum.
Family Fun Night — Friday, August 21, 6–9 p.m.
Old-fashioned ice cream, sack races, three-legged races, picnicking under the locust trees, and the firing of the candy cannon.
Fort Nisqually sits at 5519 Five Mile Drive. General museum admission runs $13.50 for adults, $10 for youth ages 4–17, and $40 for a family pass (up to two adults and five kids). Admission details for Brigade Encampment and Family Fun Night were not specified in the announcement; check parkstacoma.gov for updates. Parks Tacoma also notes that vehicle and pedestrian detours are in effect at Point Defiance Park during ongoing construction, so visitors should check the website for directions before heading out.
