Some Tacoma Public Schools students will get new teachers or classrooms by Sept. 29 as the district adjusts staffing to match actual enrollment.
Principals will notify affected families between Friday, Sept. 18, and Tuesday, Sept. 29, according to a district announcement published Thursday, Sept. 10.
The district said enrollment shifts every fall as some families move away and others who arrived over the summer finish their paperwork. Once those numbers settle, the district reassigns teachers and, in some cases, moves students to different classrooms to keep class sizes balanced.
How many classrooms will be affected in 2026-27 is not yet clear. The district said the scope varies annually, with some years requiring few changes and others bringing more extensive reshuffling.
How state funding drives the changes
The adjustments are tied directly to how Washington funds its schools.
State payments from September through December are based on a district's budgeted enrollment, according to the TPS budget page. Starting in January, those payments shift to actual enrollment figures reported to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). Staff counts and student enrollment together determine how much state money flows to the district.
That makes accurate staffing a financial necessity. Tacoma Public Schools carried a $30 million budget shortfall in the 2025-26 school year, according to district budget documents. The district said during the 2025-26 budget cycle that it had run out of ways to absorb funding gaps without cutting programs and reducing school staff.
Federal funding accounts for about 8% of the district's 2026-27 budget, roughly $47.5 million, spokesperson Kathryn McCarthy told The News Tribune in a Sept. 4 report.
What families should know
Parents and guardians do not need to take any action. Principals at affected schools will reach out directly between Sept. 18 and Sept. 29. The district has not specified whether notifications will come by email, phone or letter.
The district published a short animation on its website explaining the adjustment process.
No school board vote is associated with these changes. The reassignments are a routine administrative decision the district makes each September after enrollment stabilizes.
