A Tacoma gift shop that closed after losing its South Tacoma Way lease has reopened downtown with a new twist: a refillery bar where customers bring empty bottles and fill them with shampoo, body wash, laundry detergent or hand soap, sold by the ounce.
Hive Provisions + Refillery opened Saturday, Aug. 15 at 504 S. 11th St., Suite B, on a strip near McCoy Kids and Civic Roasters. Owner Michele Jones plans to launch the refillery bar the week of Aug. 25.
The shop's first life began in 2023 as Hive Co. at 5436 South Tacoma Way. Jones closed that location Dec. 28, 2025, after her lease was not renewed following disputes with her landlord over sewer and repair issues. She said the store lost a lot of money during that period.
Then came a break-in at the new downtown space in July. Thieves took all of Jones's technology, and it took her days to get back online and obtain a new receipt printer.
"There's just something about Hive that I couldn't let go of," Jones told The News Tribune.
Jones launched a GoFundMe campaign titled "Help Hive Reopen" and priced some items in the store higher than usual as a mini in-store fundraiser. On the shop's Facebook page, Jones wrote that being open again "is a wonderful feeling, but we are further behind financially than re-opening alone can fix."
The revamped store carries adult and children's books, birthday cards, prints, backpacks, T-shirts, handmade jewelry, home products and items for babies and pets. Jones sources as much inventory as possible from Tacoma and surrounding areas, including local art.
The concept is simple. Customers bring any empty container and fill it with bath, skin and hair-care products at the refillery bar. Jones said she's open to letting that side of the business grow.
"I'm gonna see how it goes and grow it potentially … If, at the end of the day, we're 60% a refillery and 40% a gift and lifestyle shop, I'm good with it," she said.
Hive Provisions + Refillery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and closed Monday.
